Creative Economy – a driving force for sustainable development, positioning Thailand as a Creative Industrial Hub of ASEAN

.
..........Bangkok (May 2011): The Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) is taking the lead in driving the economic growth of the country by transforming Thailand into a ‘country of thinkers’. The Thai industries and businesses will be equipped with the new opportunities and strategic implementation plans as the government steers the country towards becoming a Creative Economy. This is a national agenda, as contained in the Eleventh National Economic and Social Development Plan (NESDB).

..........The Thai government has significantly moved the agenda forward on several fronts. The target has been set to increase the market value of the domestic creative industries from 12 per cent to 20 per cent of the GDP (from 900 billion baht to one trillion baht) within 2012.
..........Thailand has the potential of being a global leader in several industries such as Food, Fashion, Furniture, Lifestyle, Tourism & Movie Locations, Automotive, Entertainment Software and many more. Thailand ’s export sector accounts for over 60 per cent of the GDP. In order to cope with the ups and downs of the world economy, Thailand has to constantly create a new competitive edge. To achieve sustainable economic growth, the country must adjust and change from heavy reliance on manufacturing sector and natural resources to reliance on knowledge and creativity.
..........Khun Pajchima Tanasanti, Director General of the Department of Intellectual Property (DIP) said “The Creative Economy will drastically shift the country’s role from exporting of agricultural, industrial products and services with meager margins, to rendering innovative and value added products and services with higher margins. Innovation and creativity in domestic industries, embeded in the hearts and minds of our people, will definitely bring in substantial income”. The government also aims at positioning the country to become an ASEAN leader of Creative Economy and a Creative Industrial hub of ASEAN.
..........The objectives of Thailand ’s Creative Economy Policy are 1) to introduce structural and infrastructure changes to power Creative Economy 2) to establish a unique education system that instills innovative and creative thinking abilities 3) to encourage awareness of the importance of Creative Economy in all economic sectors 4) to promote and support creative businesses and industries.
..........The key success factors of the Creative Economy will come from the whole value chain, starting from upstream, which is to build the infrastructure that supports innovative and creative thinking; midstream, which is to develop high-quality and creative products and services that cater to the demand of the markets and consumers, based on Thai wisdom and identity; and downstream, which is to find co-investors to promote investment and marketing in order that products and services are competitive and marketable, generating higher income for producers and the country’s economy.
..........The strategic blueprints have been laid out and the Action Plan has been implemented. There are 9 key projects worth 705 million baht, comprising 1. Creative King 2. Production of Thai cultural and historical movies 3. Creative City 4. Promotion and improvement of the existing Creative Economy 5. Promotion on Creative Economy concept 6. Creation of the new image of the Thai Creative Economy to promote Thai goods in the international markets 7. Organizing international Creative Economy seminars and workshops 8. Promotion of creative education and human resource 9. Enhancement of potential and competitiveness in product designs of 15 creative industries.
..........Thailand is well accepted as a country with unique identity, rich in arts & crafts, culture and tradition. The country is also abundant with historical tourist attractions, creative workforce, as well as unmatched talents and potentials. The government is confident that with the synergies and integrated collaboration between the government sector, industry, academia and the general public, the country will surely achieve its goals through Creative Economy Policy.
